As part of our programme to give students access to a range of opportunities designed to help them find their perfect career pathway, one Year 13 student, Megan Johnson, was able to learn more about radio broadcasting at Silk FM's Macclesfield studios. The visit was organised by Work Placement Coordinator, Mrs Sadat-Shafai and was a Chamber of Commerce Thursday Thirty event.
The Chamber of Commerce run their Thursday Thirty events across a range of industries and each time, thirty employers are invited to attend the networking occasion, which helps different industries learn and understand more about each other. Mrs Sadat-Shafai is able to take one student to accompany her to each of the events and she aims to match the career ambitions of the student to the type of business at which the event is held so that it can broaden the student's understanding and experience within their field of interest.
On this occasion, the Thursday Thirty guests were able to learn more about the history of Silk FM and were also shown round the premises, including the studios where the live broadcasts take place. Megan was delighted to be able to take a seat at the broadcasting desk and get a real taste of life as a radio presenter.
Megan is studying Media, Art and Photography and, although she has not yet decided what route into furthering her career she will take, she was keen to learn more about this aspect of the media and made the most of the opportunity, asking lots of questions about radio and taking a real interest into the various employers' conversations.
Mrs Sadat-Shafai commented on the day:
"Megan was an excellent ambassador for the school, displaying great maturity and interest and networked very well. Seeing inside the studio was a great opportunity and both Megan and myself learned a lot whilst there. I am hoping to take a group of students in the near future to see the breakfast show being broadcast live and I know that they will see a great deal of benefit from this."
