World Book Day celebrated its 25th birthday this year and we marked this milestone with a whole host of activities at CHS, including a Form Group Quiz to identify books from their covers, which we also shared on social media for parents/carers to have a go.
Four of our teachers disguised themselves for a Book Character Hunt. Students had to track them down across the school and identify their book character.
At the beginning of each lesson on World Book Day, students heard one of our teachers read part of short story, The Landlady, by Roald Dahl. Our readers were Mrs Fitzsimmons, Mrs Dearnaley, Mr Franklin, Mrs Cooper and Mrs Mackreth.
We transformed the LRC into a crime scene and Key Stage 3 participated in a Murder Mystery event, led by our librarian, Mrs Richardson. The students thoroughly enjoyed becoming detectives and working collaboratively to solve the clues to unravel the mystery of ‘Who killed Mrs Purple?’
As well as a mysterious death in the LRC, there were also mystery books.
To encourage students not to 'judge a book by its cover' and inspire them to read something new, they were invited to borrow one of the hidden books. The only clue to which book lay beneath the brown paper cover was a single line from the blurb!
